Nine Life Lessons I’ve learnt working at Embryo

life work balance

Working at an agency is a unique experience. Working at a place like Embryo is even more so. Over the past few months, I have been able to soak up as much information as I can about just what it means to work at an agency like Embryo. As a result, I have found nine lessons we learn in the office do us well in the real world too.

Collaboration is key

The striking difference between working at Embryo and other workplaces is the emphasis on working together and collaboration. Be it in your team or across departments, it has been instilled in us that the work we do is stronger when we work together. You can implement this in your personal life too. There is this notion that leaning on others is a sign of weakness. Carving out the life you envisage for yourself requires help from your loved ones. It’s a team effort and that is the way it should be.

Play the long game

All good things take time. While we may live in a world full of instant gratification it does not always heed the best results. We all have goals we want to achieve, for example, one of mine is learning to drive. Realistically, this will not happen overnight. It takes time. Goals require hard work and following a process. At Embryo, we learn it is good to have goals but to get there requires strategising, planning and action.

Who you surround yourself with is important

I truly credit the directors of Embryo for the culture they have created here. I have never worked in a place where the energy has been as uplifting and supportive as it is here. We all strive to improve each other, celebrating each other’s wins and successes on a regular basis. We all have respect for each other and truly feel like a family of sorts. I know I have made friends for life during my time here.

Strive to be the best version of yourself

The development of employees is something that is really important at our agency.. They want us to bring ideas to the table and push us to explore our interests both in and outside of your expertise. This includes making sure you are looking after yourself, eating the greens, having hobbies outside of work, booking that dentist appointment you have been avoiding. You are made to feel validated not just as an employee but as a human which is a nice feeling from people you see more than your blood family.

Have faith in yourself

Starting at Embryo I was immediately amazed at the sheer amount of talent we have in our team. There were moments when I wasn’t sure I was worthy of being part of such an incredible machine. Over the past couple of months. Thanks to my team I am forced to remind myself to have faith in myself and remember I am here for a reason. I know what I am doing and while I still get the occasional pang of imposter syndrome, the faith I have in my writing but also as a person has been immeasurable.

Soak it all in

It is not humanly possible to know everything. Learning how to do things the Embryo has meant starting with a blank canvas. Soaking up every training opportunity, asking my team leader continuous questions, listening to other team members, finding out how they do things, and working out the best way for me to do things to get the results we need. Just like in real life, you never stop learning and improving your skills.

No Ego Here!

We all have egos; it is part of the human condition. In some cases, it is quite healthy to have an ego but working at Embryo there are no big egos. Everyone chips in when they can and we help each other like a company should putting our egos aside. There is no cool kids table here,  everyone mucks in. I already knew the importance of this but seeing this in action and seeing the vibe and energy it brings to the room is something else!

Processes everywhere!

The word processes literally means the actions taken to achieve a goal. They are put in place to make sure everything runs smoothly and efficiently. You can apply this to anything from your morning routine to how to pitch a client, it all requires a process of some kind.  At Embryo the processes we use help us be more efficient and productive, something we can incorporate into our daily lives.

Make the most out of your time

At Embryo we schedule and plan each day to make sure we know exactly what each day brings so we can hit the ground running from the get-go. This also means we can factor in a little bit of a balance so we do not burn out. I have always been a bit of a planner so it is nice to discover new ways I can ensure to make every moment count. This includes things like time with loved ones, travelling, factoring in time to read, and going to the gym. Learning to make the most out of your time affords you the time you thought you didn’t have.

Working at Embryo gives you life lessons you will take with you to the grave and I honestly cannot wait to learn more.
