Welcome to the first instalment of our meet #TeamEmbryo series!

Today, we have our much-loved Director, James Welch, in the hot seat.

So, James, thanks for sitting and down and doing this with me! Can you tell us a bit about your role here at Embryo?

I invent stuff and act as a mentor for Ross Green, the managing director, and even though he won’t admit it, he listens to me.

You often refer to yourself as an industry fossil, why is that?

I started in the world of online marketing in 2002 (I think – somewhere around then)

For those that don’t know you, how would you describe your skills?

80% hard work, 20% of ideas that come to me in the middle of the night.

What are the three things that not many people know about you?

  1. I wrote several books about poetry (somehow sold a few hundred).
  2. I am fascinated with box office statistics but have little time to watch movies.
  3. My mum went shopping last Tuesday.

You are the go-to man in the office if anybody wants some advice due to your endless wisdom, so if you could give your younger self some advice, what would it be?

Work harder than you did yesterday. Do this until it becomes a habit. Then one day you’ll wake up and you will be somewhere you like. If you don’t do as I suggested, then don’t moan at the world for your problems.

What is your favourite quote?

Amor fati.

What is your go-to snack?

Werthers Original. Although I was addicted for some years, even injecting them at one point. Very hard to melt on a spoon. Takes ages. Now I can take them in moderation. Alternatively, it’s a Wholenut.

If you were on death row, what would you like your last meal to be?

Chick-fil-A – UK people that have never been to the states will never understand the joy.

If you were stuck on a desert island and could only listen to one album, which would it be?

The “One Million Greatest Hits Since 1950”.

What do you enjoy most about Embryo?

Watching young people’s eyes glaze over when I tell them a story.
