Make More Out of Work

Modern life is busy. We get up early, go to bed late and squeeze in a lot between. A huge majority of time is spent at work and this is just the way it is. You can think of this as a depressing thought or you can turn it and make the most of it, making the working week your own. Take the bull by the horns (etc, etc, etc.)! For me, I like to add some personality into my week and bring it with me into the office, this keeps me motivated, energised and altogether a happier camper when I might not be feeling that way when I wake up. Here are some things I sprinkle into my mix that you may like too. We’ll see.

At the top of my list comes fashion, clothes and persona. I often reflect my mood or who I want to be that day in my outfit, I’m a firm believer in dressing the part. When you get dressed in the morning, it can really set the tone for the rest of the day, if you’re feeling confident in yourself then this emanates from within and allows you to own the day. It isn’t called power dressing for no reason. Below are some casual workwear ideas as seen at New York Fashion Week.

Another thing I like to do during the week is incorporating exercise into my working day. Okay, I know, but stay with me! By exercise I don’t necessarily mean a hardcore gym session, lunch break exercise can simply mean going for a walk around the block rather than sitting at your desk or somewhere else in your office. Don’t be an office hermit, get some air in those lungs! Efforts were made on my part to encourage our office to get rid of desk chairs and replace them with Swiss Balls, unsurprisingly this wasn’t very popular. I’ve also been getting into a weekly lunchtime swim, this is really good for a whole-body exercise plus I always feel so refreshed and ready to go into the afternoon!

I’m sure I’m not alone in this, but knowing I have something good for lunch really adds excitement to my day (no judgements please). I’ve started getting into making something that I’m going to enjoy eating as having the same thing every day can become mundane very quickly. There’s a lot of inspiration around these days, my social media feeds are filled with easy recipe videos. My favourite place for inspiration is BOSH! although, I’m seriously not aversed to beans on toast thrown in on a Wednesday. Lunch doesn’t even have to be a solo endeavour, Team Embryo has been known to hold the odd team lunch. The idea is that we all have to make a dish at home (not shop bought – you know who you are!) and bring it in, then we all sit down and enjoy the fruits of our labours together!

Our company has a lot going on a lot of the time, just like many other companies out there! Here at Embryo, we all get involved in different projects that we have going on even if it’s not exactly our “job description”. Personally, I love this about a workplace, it makes for less linear days and adds interesting extras to your working life. Even if it’s not a big project, there’s always room for doing something outside your working box. For example, we all get involved with our blog (you may have noticed). Having a blog is great for your online presence and SEO, having different voices makes it a lot more interesting (I may be biased) so why not see about pitching in for your company too!

Did someone say Book Club? No? Well, now I have. This is something we’ve just started in our office and it’s something I would absolutely recommend. It’s easy to get involved with and it’s the perfect way to get stuck into a book. I’m as guilty as the next person for always saying I should read more yet never do. We take it in turns to choose the book, so there are no complaints about it being unfair. It’s hard not to judge a book by its cover, but choose wisely – that’s what reviews are there for!

The last point I’ll touch upon is the personal touch. My personal touch comes in the form of the crystals I keep on my desk (pictured below) but to each their own, some people like stationary.
